Carrick: Mourinho knows how to win important games; I feel comfortable coaching Manchester United

Manchester United legend Carrick talked about his experience working with Mourinho and his feelings as the interim head coach of the Red Devils in an interview recently.

In the summer of 2016, Mourinho was appointed as Manchester United head coach. Carrick retired in May 2018, and soon after he joined Mourinho's coaching staff. But in December 2018, Mourinho was fired by Manchester United.

Under Mourinho's leadership, Manchester United beat Tottenham Hotspur three times, defeating Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City twice respectively. And in four games against Liverpool, Manchester United remained unbeaten until Mourinho lost 1-3 in his last game at Anfield. In the Champions League one month ago, Manchester United defeated Juventus 2-1 away, which was an unforgettable victory.

Carrick said of Mourinho: "He is extremely eager for victory, which is an obvious thing. He has his own unique style and knows how to win important games, which is Mourinho's biggest advantage."

After Solskjaer was fired in November 2021, Carrick took over as Manchester United's interim head coach. He led the team to three games in just 11 days, Manchester United defeated Villarreal and Arsenal and drew with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. But just a few minutes after a 3-2 home victory over Arsenal, Manchester United confirmed that Carrick would leave after 15 and a half years of playing for the club, players, coaches and interim coaches are all roles he has played at Old Trafford.

At that time, Ronnick's original plan was to get Carrick into his team, but in October 2022, Carrick went to Middlesbrough to serve as head coach until he was fired earlier this month.

Speaking of his experience in coaching Manchester United, Carrick said: "It's a big responsibility, but to be honest, I didn't feel much difference or leap. I've been at Manchester United for a long time, and over time you'll get used to everything. Sometimes you need to experience it yourself to understand that feeling.

"The situation was really difficult when Solskjaer left, and I think I have to coach the team to play a few games. But I have a very good relationship with him, and I feel very natural in everything. I didn’t have much pressure either, and it made me feel comfortable working on this job. ”
